BUFFALO NICKELS

Clip Error (Submitted by: Bob Bakondi)

The word "clip" or "cut" which is commonly used, suggests a piece of the planchet was cut off. An "incomplete planchet planchet" occurs when the punch does not completely punch out the planchet but leaves a circular groove. Such is the case in this coin. This coin can be faked easily, but to detect a fake, look opposite the "clip" as shown in (A) and you will notice a weak or missing rim, caused from uneven pressure when the error occured. In this particular coin also note the double rim effect in (B) and (C). This coin is actually larger than a normal buffalo nickel.
