BUFFALO NICKELS

1937 D Three Legged Buffalo Nickel (Submitted by: Bob Bakondi)

This is probably the most widely known error coin in history. Throughout history people have been fascinated with mistakes of collectible items; especially with everyday things like coins, stamps, and baseball cards. The three legged buffalo nickel is right up there in popularity with Honus Wagner and the inverted Jenny (upside down airplane stamp).

WATCH OUT FOR FAKES - This nickel is often forged but if you look for the following points, this will help you identify the real coins.

a) The beard on the right side is longer than the beard on the left side.
b) The rear leg is very weak and appears almost damaged.
c) There should be no file or polish marks in the area where the leg is missing.
*The words "Pluribus and Unum" are seperated from the back of the Buffalo (SEE EXAMPLE BELOW).
